Short Film Overview

Geri's Game

Geri's game is a very short film that lasts just over 4 minutes. It's about an elderly man playing chess in the park, he is playing chess by himself yet the style of shots make it look like there is actually two of him (almost like a split personality.) Geri's Game won an academy award for the Best Short Film (animated) in 1998.

  • Geri's game was interesting because it had a simple narrative but it was made in a way that interested the audience.
  • The animation was done well and the characters features were very detailed, his age was emphasised through this style of animation.
  • The shot reverse shot edit between the character actually made it seem like the man was two different people, this made the narrative more realistic.
  • Non diegetic background sound is quite upbeat and cheerful.
  • Diegetic sound over background music is done well and the sounds are emphasised e.g. the chess pieces falling over.
  • Long shot of Geri playing alone represents the narrative that he is the only player and it was made to look like there were 2 people playing.
